Te Papakupu Māori for Firefox

Firefox is one of the most popular web-browsers available. It is supported by Mozilla, a foundation that promotes public involvement in developing and using Firefox. Through the use of addon's, Mozilla have managed to enable Firefox to be extended in a variety of ways. Mozilla have been so successful at encouraging developers to support Firefox, that there are now several thousand's of addons available.

Te Papakupu Māori for Firefox is an addon, which enables the spell-checker in Firefox to understand te reo Māori.

Installing

Follow these steps to install Te Papkupu Māori for Firefox:

  1. If you have not already, open this web-page with Firefox.
  2. Click here to prompt Firefox to install the addon.
  3. By default Firefox will not trust extensions from anyone (including me) from anywhere accept the Mozilla Addons site. So to continue with the installation you have to verify that it is ok to install the extension from me - Allow papakupu.maori.nz as a trusted provider of addons.
  4. Once the extension is downloaded and installed, you will need to restart Firefox to active it. Make a note of the location or URL of this page so that you can come back here.
  5. You can now start using the extension.

Testing

The quickest way to see the addon in action is to open the discussion section of this wiki page.

Once the page is open, right click inside the form - you should see a drop down menu of languages you can choose from, which now includes 'Maori' and 'Maori (Tai Tokerau)'. Select one of the dictionaries and Firefox will start underlining any words in red that it does not recognize. Right click on a word to get a list of suggestions. NOTE: This is a dictionary to check the spelling of Māori words, not a dictionary to translate from English to Māori, so any English words will either not have any suggestions or have a suggestion that is probably not helpful for te reo Māori.

If you have any problems leave a message on the discussion page or email me and I'll give you a hand.
