OpenOffice is a free Open Source alternative to the Microsoft Office Suite. It is comprised of a word processor (Writer), spreadsheet(Calc), presentation program (Impress), vector graphics (Draw), and database (Base) programs. OpenOffice 3.0 is currently is downloadable from the OpenOffice.org download site. Te Papakupu Māori includes support for a spell-check dictionary, and experimental support for hyphenation rules and a thesaurus. The extension is available for download from the OpenOffice Extensions Repository, and (unlike OpenOffice 2) should automatically update itself when new versions of Te Papakupu Māori become available.

[edit] Installing

Before installing Te Papakupu Māori, you must ensure that your desktop is set to Māori by default. If you are using Microsoft Windows then check Configuring Windows for te reo Māori. If your using Ubuntu then check Configuring Ubuntu for te reo Māori.

  1. Download the latest version of Te Papakupu Māori from the OpenOffice Extensions Repository and save it to a temporary location on your computer.
  2. Start OpenOffice Writer and select the Extension Manager... menu-item.

  3. The Extension Manager allows you to view which extensions are installed, whether they are enabled or disables, and whether any updates exist.

  4. Click on the Add... button, and you should see a file dialog box which allows you to browse and select the extension you downloaded in the first step. Click Open once you have selected the extension.

  5. OpenOffice will install the extension and show the license agreement of Te Papakupu Māori.

  6. Read through the text, or if you are in a hurry, you can scroll directly to the bottom of the text. Then click Accept if you agree to the Terms and Conditions.

  7. Installation of Te Papakupu Māori is now complete (you do not need to restart), and should be visible from within the Extension Manager with a status of Enabled.

[edit] Testing

After configuring your desktop for te reo Māori (see above), start OpenOffice Writer. You should see Maori New Zealand in the bottom status bar of the window.

  1. To use the spell-checking engine, type in a word not recognized by te Papakupu Māori. It should be underlined in red.

  2. Right click on the word, and you should get a menu of suggestions that you can replace the word with.
