From Te Papakupu Māori
OpenOffice is a free alternative to the Microsoft Office Suite. It is comprised of a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation program, and database programs. Version 2 of OpenOffice is the recommended version for users.
Te Papakupu Māori is available as a spell-check dictionary and is installed through the in-built OpenOffice Dictionary Installer.

Installing
Before installing Te Papakupu Māori, you must ensure that your desktop is set to Māori by default. If you are using Microsoft Windows then check Configuring Windows for te reo Māori. If your using Ubuntu then check Configuring Ubuntu for te reo Māori.
- To begin, start OpenOffice Writer and select the Install new dictionaries... menu-item.
- This opens the DicOOo macro. Move the arrow over the word English, with one hand hold down the 'Ctrl' key on the keyboard, and with the other click the left mouse button.
- Move the mouse over the box Start DicOOo, and click the left mousebutton.
- You should now see a window. Check that Off-line language pack installation is not selected, and that Current user setup is selected. Then click on Next.
- Click on Retrieve the list.
- Scroll down the list and select Maori (New Zealand). Click on Next.
- Do not download... should not be checked.
- Click on Finish.
- To complete installation you will need to restart OpenOffice and its' Quickstart launcher. If your unsure what that is, then restarting your computer will achieve the same result.
Testing
After configuring your desktop for te reo Māori (see above), start OpenOffice Writer. You should see Maori New Zealand in the bottom status bar of the window.
- To use the spell-checking engine, type in a word not recognized by te Papakupu Māori. It should be underlined in red.
- Right click on the word, and you should get a menu of suggestions that you can replace the word with.
